2002 Happy Holiday Letter

Ed & Mary Lou Rhodes

Ed just returned from Copper Mountain Colorado where he attended a birthday bash for close friend Clif Taylor (Hall of Fame Skier). The theme was: " Let the Good Times Roll" at 80 and beyond...SO LET`S ROLL TOO...Yes Ed did ski Blackrock run at 12,000 feet of rarefied air. But wobbly at the bottom, he promised daughter Sallie and her husband Ron, he would now turn in his skies for oars. (M-Lou stayed home as she is leaving soon for Tucson to visit daughter Pauline and new hubby Gene at their new home on Skyway Drive.) Yes, we did enjoy other trips together.

The highlight: 10 days in Costa Rica, a truly safe democracy. We stayed at the historic Don Carlos Hotel where Mary-Lou ended up accompanying the famous guitarist Ray Tico (Long story). We also had dinner with Ed`s cousin`s daughter Diane Jukofsky and her husband who are both heavily involved in the Rain Forest Alliance. We also floated down a wild jungle river, snorkeled for oysters and swam in a hot volcanic stream. Even made several interesting trade contacts, including discussions with coffee plantation Cafebritt. Other trips keep the good times rolling...a weekend with M-Lou`s brother and Lois, attending plays and dinner at Hilton Head where we also visited Ed`s cousin, Ginny Ann. And, enjoyed a reunion lunch with M-Lou`s son Paul and Pam, who are now back from Mexico

In early summer we flew to Seattle for a San Juan Islands to Victoria and the islands beyond cruise on Marilou and Tad` Rolfe`s family yacht. Then, island hopped to Whidbey Island to see M-Lou`s other daughters Alice and Ceska. Ended the year boating on Ed`s son`s new Sea Ray, delivering Santa on a sea ride to the town of Occoquan to a waiting crowd of kids.

The good times rolled at home too. Waggie Maggie, a lively Springer, came bounding into our life. She eagerly joins Ed on his almost daily dingy rows on the waterway or on romps to SugerLoaf Sand dune...or watches over Mary-Lou`s twice a week tennis games. She also thoroughly enjoys chasing ocean waves in front of the Carolina Yacht Club.

Mary-Lou keeps busy teaching piano to talented little Ebony at the Junior League sponsored "Dreams" for at risk kids. She is still actively playing for Patron openings for our new Museum of Art. Her newest interest is serving on the board of the new Wilmington Ballet Company, while Ed continues on the board of the Roger Bacon Charter Day School.

Thankfully we had few ailments! Ed did get bitten by a tick which turned into a nasty case of Rocky Mountain Spotted fever. All was cured in several weeks by a retired Major (airborne combat group MD) who was experienced in such illness. M-Lou just specializes in bruises to her legs hitting open dishwasher doors.

Come respond to the subtle shifting of the winds on our deck overlooking Tangle Oaks Marina. Watch the pelicans dive and enjoy with us the imperceptible ebbing of the tides. Ed and Mary-Lou and waggie Maggie too.
